How odds are calculated
Lottery odds are calculated using combinatorial mathematics. The formula for the odds of matching all main numbers is:
C(n, k) = n! / (k! * (n-k)!)
Where n is the total number of balls in the pool, and k is the number of balls you need to pick. For games with extra balls (Powerball, Mega Ball, etc.), the odds are multiplied by the odds of matching the extra ball(s).
For example, Powerball jackpot odds: C(69,5) × C(26,1) = 1 in 292,201,338.

Why lottery odds matter
Understanding the true odds of winning a lottery jackpot is important for making informed decisions. Many players don't realize just how unlikely a jackpot win is. For example, you are more likely to be struck by lightning (1 in 15,300) than to win the Powerball jackpot (1 in 292 million).
This tool uses the standard combinatorial formula to calculate the exact odds of winning the jackpot for each lottery game. The odds shown are for a single ticket play.

Odds FAQ
What does "1 in X" mean?
It means that on average, you would need to buy X tickets to win the jackpot once. For example, odds of 1 in 292 million mean you would need to buy 292 million tickets (costing $584 million for Powerball at $2 each) to have a reasonable expectation of one jackpot win.
Do odds change when the jackpot rolls over?
No. The odds of winning the jackpot are fixed by the game's number format and do not change regardless of the prize amount. Only the expected value changes with the jackpot size.
What are the odds of winning any prize?
The overall odds of winning any prize (including small prizes) are much better. For Powerball, the overall odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 24.9. However, most prizes are small ($4-$100).
