Winning is rare — but if it happens, the first hours matter. Follow the steps, see the timeline, and check what to do before you claim.

Use the checklist below. It adapts to your state (anonymity rules and claim deadline) and your prize size.

Prize Claim FAQ

Should I sign the ticket right away?

Yes. Signing the back establishes you as the owner. An unsigned ticket is essentially a bearer instrument — whoever holds it can claim it. Photograph it too, but don't share photos publicly before claiming.

Can I stay anonymous?

It depends on where you play. Some states (e.g. Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas) allow winners to remain anonymous or claim via a trust. Others require disclosure. Select your state above to see its general stance.

How long do I have to claim?

Claim windows vary widely — often 90 days to a year, sometimes shorter. Check your state's official deadline the moment you think you've won.

Is a lump sum or annuity better to claim?

Most choose lump sum, but it depends on tax and your plans. Use our Lump Sum vs Annuity tool and talk to an advisor before deciding.
